International Day of the Girl・国際ガールズデー

先日、 Because I am a Girl(Plan International Japan) キャンペーン主催の「ルワンダの女の子にガールズキットを贈ろう!」というチャリティイベントに参加してきました。

October 11th is International Day of the Girl — a day observed by the United Nations to raise awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide.

The other day, I participated in a charity event ran by the Plan International Japan's "Because I am a Girl" campaign, where the portion of the proceeds will go to delivering "survival kits" (menstural hygiene kit) to girls in Rwanda.

Two girls, Françoise and Rebecca, traveled all the way from Rwanda to Japan for the first time in their life, to share their story and hardships of living as a teenage girl in Rwanda.

Girls in Rwanda start their day by fetching water at the break of dawn and doing household chores before going to school. Even afterschool, they are busy with more chores left with no time to study — while the boys have time to play. By the end of the day, not only are they exhausted but they don't even have proper lighting to finish their homework. On top of that, many teenage girls have to miss school during their period simply because they cannot affort sanitary pads —  otherwise they do not have access to safe and clean facilities at school and are teased by their classmates.

Françoise wants to become a International journalist and Rebecca wants to become a doctor. Even under such harsh conditions, they are continuing to study hard towards their dreams. Their speech was eye-opening and their courage was truly inspiring.

We participated in the charity raffle and gave away a HANNAH pouch and an OLIVIA pouch.

i am atashi は全ての女の子が、安心して、自信を持って「あたしはあたし」と言える世界を願い続けます。

There are still many barriers to overcome regarding gender inequality (for boys as well) and in order to do so, each society needs to address and improve this issue and each individual needs to be aware and reform their way of thinking — to overcome the stereotypical ideals and gender roles of "Because you're a girl..." or "Because you're a boy..."

"i am atashi" continues to hope for a world where every girl can say "I am me," with confidence in a safe environment.

Happy International Day of the Girl!
